Join in a bomba dance workshop from Puerto Rico es Bombas in our Black Box Theatre. This workshop is part of La Familia, a month-long cultural experience celebrating Hispanic Heritage. 

Included in Museum admission and membership. 

What is bomba?

Bomba is a traditional Afro-Puerto Rican music genre and dance style. Bomba features barriles, or barrel-shaped drums, cuá sticks, maracas, dancers, and singers. It is a call and response between dance and rhythm.  

Unlike most styles where dancers take their cues from the music, in bomba, the dancers take the lead. Drummers respond to dancer’s movements and interpret them into rhythm. Added percussion instruments, like cuá sticks, and maracas, create layers.
